The Municipal Caves

The Valkenburg Caves welcome over 100,000 visitors every year. The Romans started to work in these caves around 2,000 years ago when they began mining the ground for the marl they needed as building material. The Caves give extensive insight into the living conditions of countless generations of people that worked in these caves. In the caves you can see wall paintings and plaques. But the history of these underground passages goes even further back as you can tell by the fossils and layers of shells found in the rock. This dark labyrinth of underground passages conceals many interesting things for you to discover.
